{"id":1590,"date":"2022-08-15T07:57:20","date_gmt":"2022-08-15T07:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/downhilltravel.com\/?p=1590"},"modified":"2025-02-05T19:31:44","modified_gmt":"2025-02-05T19:31:44","slug":"coming-soon-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/downhilltravel.com\/index.php\/2022\/08\/15\/coming-soon-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Valladolid"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sorry.&nbsp; The story of Valladolid doesn\u2019t have ancient Iberian tribes or Romans.&nbsp; It was founded in the 11<sup>th<\/sup> century, was the capital of Spain for a time, kings were born here, and Christopher Columbus died here.&nbsp; Oh, and it\u2019s the capital of the region of capital of Castile and Le\u00f3n. &nbsp;&nbsp;Hardly any history at all, really.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first glance, it a 20<sup>th<\/sup> century industrial town.&nbsp; At second glance, it is so much more.&nbsp; Cathedrals, chapels and colleges with intricate carvings that bogle the mind. &nbsp;How did they do that?&nbsp; And at least one cathedral that couldn\u2019t.&nbsp; Unfortunately, all that splendor is surrounded by 20<sup>th<\/sup> century crap architecture and vacant shops lining the main streets.&nbsp; Sad, yes, but a real opportunity for bargain hunters: how about a 4-bedroom house, with swimming pool, in sunny Spain for a couple hundred Gs?&nbsp; It does my heart good to look at the postings in the Realtor\u2019s window and think \u201cI can this.\u201d&nbsp; A bit different from Frisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My first clue of Valladolid\u2019s glory was when I spotted the Church of Saint Paul (Iglesia de San Pablo).\u00a0 Stunning \u201chigh relief\u201d carvings cover the front from ground to sky.\u00a0 Carvings projecting so far out of the wall, that you can see up the robes!\u00a0 Aside from the carvings, the church is otherwise pretty standard. Bell towers flank the entry\u2026 but wait\u2026 what\u2019s that?\u00a0 The stone work is off.\u00a0 The tower on your right has beautifully matched stones.\u00a0 The tower on your left is a hodgepodge by comparison.\u00a0 Was it originally plastered?\u00a0 Shoddy repairs? It is definitely worth a tour.&nbsp; It\u2019s a college, a chapel and a museum all in one.&nbsp; The chapel is ridiculously asymmetrical.&nbsp; In part, things were added to the chapel later because they looked like they would go.&nbsp; In part, its whimsical.&nbsp; Mostly, its due the chapel being squished up against the Iglesia de Pablo.&nbsp; Just shoe-horned in there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The courtyard is so intricately carved that it was only by comparing one section to the next that I figured out how it was built.&nbsp;
